After two nights of bust-outs in Sin City on Friday and Saturday night, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros celebrated Halloween a day early on Oct. 30 with a one-night stand at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Ariz. There, they continued the weekend trend with another bust out, a fitting choice for the holiday at hand, with a classic cover of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London,” a number that frequented the Grateful Dead’s setlist since it entered their repertoire in 1978.

The Sunday evening show got underway with “Hell in a Bucket” into “I Need a Miracle.” For the following number, Weir and his band: Don Was, Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane and Barry Sless, welcomed the Wolf Pack and beckoned back to Weir’s RatDog days with the original “Odessa.” A sweet song choice came next, as the group worked through “Candyman” ahead of “Loose Lucy” and “She Says.” The night’s initial set brought a tight rendition of “Bombs Away” before they closed the frame on “Birdsong.”

After a break from the stage, the band returned and jumped right into their second set, which recalled classic numbers associated with the day of the week with the biblically-infused “My Brother Esau” and “Samson and Delilah.” Next, Weir pulled out a number from his Ace debut on fan favorite “Playing in the Band,” which ran over into “Eternity.” Then, the group worked through a cover of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” before reprising “Playing in the Band” to the crowd’s delight.

For the following number, Weir & Wolf Bros decided on a stunning display of “Wharf Rat,” which included instrumental peaks and valleys by the Wolf Pack. Next, the group jammed on “Casey Jones” to conclude their second frame before leaving the stage. Then, the crowd’s applause called the musicians back for an unforgettable encore of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.” The number represented a bust out for this group of musicians, who last played the cover on Halloween 2018. Moreover, the latter has long been a part of the Grateful Dead concerts since it was introduced to their repertoire on April 19, 1978, at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus. Since then, “Werewolves of London” frequented the Grateful Dead’s seasonal setlist and has been a fan favorite particularly around Halloween.

After last night’s memorable show in Phoenix, Ariz., Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros will migrate to Salt Lake City for a Tuesday night gig in Delta Hall at Eccles Theater. Tickets are sold out.
