Grateful Dead HQ celebrated the new year by revisiting the band’s memorable 12/31/78 stop at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, specifically sharing their set-one “Stagger Lee.”

Explains GD archivist/legacy manager David Lemieux, “‘Stagger Lee,’ a Hunter-Garcia take on a classic story song, was played consistently 1978-1995 with the exception of a six year hiatus 1979-1985 (aside from two versions played in August 1982). Its appearance in first sets throughout this era was always a treat.”

Interestingly, Lemieux and company shared another pro-shot “Stagger Lee” (7/1/92) just a couple weeks prior to this one.

The All The Years Live series has also dipped heavily into this 12/31/78 performance, sharing clips of “Casey Jones,” “Samson and Delilah,” “Not Fade Away,” “St. Stephen” and more.
