The Rex Theater, located in Pittsburgh, Pa.’s South Side neighborhood, has announced that is is closing permanently “due to the ongoing hardship and uncertain future caused by the Covid pandemic.” The beloved venue shared the news today via social media.
“We want to thank everyone who’s come to a show, everyone’s who’s played a show, everyone who has worked in ways big and small and helped us make this crazy dream a reality,” read the venue’s post. “It meant much more than a music venue to us, and we hope it did to you too. Nothing has made us happier than sharing this space and music with all of you over the past eleven years.”
“The memories that we’ve all made in these four walls will live on,” the note continued. “The music that’s happened here will live on. The friendships and relationships made in this room will live on. The beautiful energy that all of you helped us create will live on.”
The Rex also clarified that they have considered “every option” to keep the venue open, but it would simply be impossible in today’s entertainment environment. “While we greatly appreciate all of your support, and we understand that many of you would like to find some way to save The Rex, please trust that we have considered every option and have done everything possible to keep our dream alive for as long as we could,” it wrote.

September 23, 2020 at 5:45 pmThis is a major blow to the music scene in Pittsburgh. There are very few small intimate venues in the area. Now, it leaves mr. Smalls as the logical choice for jam bands.

September 23, 2020 at 4:39 pmRight, it’s only people in nursing homes getting sick and dying. Pull your head out of your ass and look around.

September 24, 2020 at 12:12 amPretty sure that “God” is a little puss who tries to be sarcastic to hide both his closed minded beliefs and insecurities. He has to hide in the shadows to talk shit… pure puss. I don’t mind differences of opinion, just have the ability to back your point with fact, not juvenile bs.
