On Saturday Dec. 7, Phish played their second of three nights at the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, S.C. The show was highlighted by a first-set-closing “Moonage Daydream,” a deep “Split Open and Melt” jam and the fifth-ever version of “The Connection,” an Anastasio/Marshall tune last heard on 7/29/2015 (show gap: 171).

The first set began with “Fluffhead,” which featured excellent playing from guitarist Trey Anastasio during the final section (“Fluff’s Arrival”). Standard versions of “Ocelot,” “Nellie Kane” and “The Dogs” followed, which led into a stunning rendition of “Reba.”

“Halfway to the Moon” > “Train Song” came next, followed by a very solid performance of “Guyute,” a song which often gives Anastasio trouble. “Strange Design” slowed things down briefly, before the fourth-ever performance of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” closed the set in style.

Set two began with the aforementioned revival of “The Connection.” “Mr. Completely” followed and featured the first type-two jam of the night. The 16-plus minute jam featured multiple sections with both Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell taking the lead role at different times as the rhythm section held it down. “Crosseyed and Painless” came next, which led to another exciting Phish moment; around nine minutes into the jam, Anastasio began teasing “Little Drummer Boy,” which led to the entire band joining in for a “Little Drummer Boy” jam. Anastasio continued to tease the song throughout the night, notably whistling the “Little Drummer Boy” tune during the intro to “Dirt.”

“Cool Amber and Mercury” ventured into type-two territory; as it fizzled, drummer Jon Fishman began “Split Open and Melt.” This “Melt” jam was all over the place in the best way: it featured space jamming with Fishman on the Marimba Lumina, a “Crosseyed” reprise and vicious soloing from Anastasio to bring it home. “A Life Beyond The Dream” offered a chance for the audience to take a breather before the band dropped into the always-energetic “Wilson.” “The Squirming Coil” closed out the set, putting McConnell’s beautiful playing on display during the outro. A standard “Grind” began the two-song encore, before McConnell pulled out his beloved keytar for a show-closing performance of “Frankenstein” (the band’s first since 2017’s Baker’s Dozen).

Phish tour concludes tonight at the North Charleston Coliseum.
