Closing a jam packed weekend, Widespread Panic played their third of three shows at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Sunday night, offering their seventh-ever version of Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer.”

The show kicked off with a nice, three-part “Big Wooly Mammoth”> “Pleas”> “Makes Sense To Me” jam, before the band played a batch of stand-alone tunes including their first “Angels On High” since October 2017.

WSP got the crowd excited with a cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” and wrapped up the first half with “Up All Night” and “Conrad.”

Set two highlights included an openeing “Ain’t Life Grand” (with John Bell swapping his guitar for a mandolin) as well as the subsequent jam section that began with “Gimmie” and made its way through a number of songs before “Fishwater” bled its way into a “Drums” section, with the percussion Duane Trucks and Sunny Ortiz taking center stage.

Then came the aforementioned “Cortez the Killer,” which elicited cheers from the St. Augustine crowd from its very first notes. The tune was last played by WSP on July 3, 2016 in Bend, Ore. with Jerry Joseph (show gap: 124).

Bell sang lead vocals on the 10-plus minute Neil Young tune, and guitarist Jimmy Herring was sure to leave his stamp on the composition as well. The set closed with one more segue into “Fishwater,” and Widespread Panic ended their St. Augustine weekend with and encore of “Honey Bee” and “Dream Song.”
