Gov’t Mule wrapped up their run of US spring tour dates this past weekend with performances that included a Saturday show at the Orpheum Theatre in New Orleans as the city rounded out its Jazz & Heritage Festival offerings, and the band welcomed a number of guests to mark the occasion, after having jammed with keyboardist Rick Gerken on an encore of “Gonna Send You Back To Georgia” on Thursday evening in Florida.
The Saturday-night collaborations kicked off near the end of the first set, when Mule were joined by the Leevee Horns for a trio of covers, The Band’s “The Shape I’m In,” Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” and “Take Me to the River.” The horn section would then return in the second set for James Brown’s “Its a Man’s World” and Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon,” the latter also featuring guitarist/singer-songwriter Alvin Youngblood Hart.
The guest spots continued later in the set with a cover of Gregg Allman’s “Come & Go Blues” featuring guitarist Scott Sharrard, a former member of the late Allman’s solo band. Mule and Sharrard were then joined by Smokey Greenwell for “Done Somebody Wrong” before Robert Randolph came out to replace Sharrard on the set-closing “32/20 Blues.” The night would then close out with an encore of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” with special guest guitarist Eric McFadden.
