Bob Weir continued his winter tour dates with his Wolf Bros project on Tuesday night at The Fillmore in Detroit, and the trio, featuring bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane, welcomed local saxophonist David McMurray for several tunes throughout the evening.
After opening with “Jack Straw” and fitting in a mix of covers and tunes from his various projects over the years, including the recently revived “Bomb Away,” Weir and company brought out McMurray—who played in Was’ own band, Was (Not Was) (and joined Was and Weir at last year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival)—for a set-closing run of “Bird Song.”
Set two kicked off with Weir’s solo cut “Only a River” then dug into Grateful Dead staple “Tennessee Jed” and “Weather Report Suite” with a “Let it Grow” tag featuring another guest spot from McMurray, who also stuck around for “Eyes of the World.” After a Wolf Bros cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence,” McMurray returned helped closed the second set on “Standing on Shakey Ground” and “Turn On Your Lovelight.” The trio then wrapped up the night with an encore cover of Tom Petty’s “Breakdown.”
See the full setlist below, along with fan-shot video of the “Weather Report”> “Let It Grow”> “Eyes” collaboration. Next up for Weir and Wolf Bros is a show tonight at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati, OH. See their full schedule here.
