Southern rock has deep roots at the Beacon Theatre. The Allman Brothers Band made its debut on the legendary New York stage with a four-night run in 1989, then went on to perform a staggering total of 238 shows through their unforgettable final concert in 2014. In 2011, while the genre’s immortal forebears were cementing their legacy with that last act, the Beacon welcomed the celebrated torchbearers of the Tedeschi Trucks Band for the first time. Since then, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based 12-piece ensemble has known the theater as a second home; on Saturday, May 24, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and their master collaborators closed out a six-night run with their 64th Beacon show to date–a landmark they celebrated with a very special finale.
Tedeschi Trucks Band took the storied stage on Saturday with the year’s first treatment of its 2019 standout “Signs, High Times.” That theme continued through the concert for a total of nine 2025 debuts, including covers of Junior Wells’ “Little by Little,” Bob Dylan’s “Lord Protect My Child” and “Tangled Up in Blue,” Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham’s soul essential “Sweet Inspiration,” Derek and the Dominoes’ “Tell the Truth” and the TTB original “All the Love.”
Following further highlights, like a bluesy medley of Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery,” the band trailed an explosive “I Want More” into a set-closing spin on Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.” The second set rolled in with “Just as Strange,” then reached down to gritty, soul-baring depths with Bessie Smith’s “Gin House Blues” and shot back to electrifying highs with “Shame” and the appropriate “Midnight in Harlem.” TTB saved its very best for last, wrapping the second frame with the beloved Revelator cut “Bound for Glory.”
When Tedeschi Trucks Band stepped back into the spotlight for the last encore of its 2025 Beacon Theatre run, the true power of its history in the space came to the fore. Winking at their scoreboard at the New York institution, Tedeschi and Trucks stepped aside to let the band bring on a debut instrumental cover of The Beatles’ classic “When I’m Sixty-Four,” complete with jangling keys, triumphant bursts of horns and sing-along vocals from the crowd. To underscore the significance of the occasion, Tedeschi expressed to the audience, “Thank you so much. It’s because of you guys that somehow that number exists. And thank you so much to the Beacon Theatre for having us for that many shows, and to the amazing staff here, and our band and our crew. We just couldn’t do it without all of you, so thank you.”
For one final show of gratitude, the band sped through an anthemic “Soul Sweet Song” to a two-part tribute to Sly & the Family Stone featuring guest keyboardist Deshawn “D’Vibes” Alexander, beginning with 2025’s first “Sing a Simple Song” and dancing into a bust-out of “I Want to Take You Higher,” which they’d staged last in July 2022. In the wake of this thrilling conclusion, Tedeschi Trucks Band will take two months away from the stage before picking up the Live in ‘25 Tour at the end of July.
