Joe Russo’s Almost Dead headlined Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony Summer Stage last night. The concert opened with a freeform jam that segued into “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” From there, the musicians moved into “Row Jimmy” and a nod to local hero Bruce Springsteen in the form of his classic “Atlantic City.” (Like many jam acts who cover “Atlantic City,” JRAD’s take is filtered through The Band’s ’90s cover of the tune.) The Springsteen took then transitioned into the Dead’s arrangement of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” and Jerry Garcia Band’s “Cats Under the Stars.”
At the end of their first set, JRAD also debuted a version of The Allman Brothers Band’s famed instrumental “Les Brers in A Minor.” Russo took part in The Brothers shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden last month and played the Eat a Peach tune with surviving original and latter-day members of Southern-rock pioneers.
JRAD will perform New Haven, CT’s Westville Music Bowl tonight. They hosted a socially distanced residency at the space during the pandemic.
