Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus is changing up his sound on his forthcoming solo album, veering into the realm of electronica on Groove Denied (out March 15 via Matador Records).

And while, Malkmus did release an album with his band The Jicks as recently as May 2018, Groove Denied will offer the musician a chance to explore different genres. It will also be the first LP he releases exclusively under his own name since his self-titled 2001 album Stephen Malkmus.

“I’m into new gadgetry,” the musician told Relix of his passion for computer-generated sounds. “I get bombarded with spam from these companies once I order something, but it can be fun to play with—very much like video games, except you’re making songs.”

Malkmus has debuted his new sound in the music video for “Viktor Borgia” wherein, according to a press release, “he turns into a digital avatar and dance-battles the digital avatars of a Random Businessman and a pony-tailed pop-star named Ariana.”
