Phil Lesh’s 2018 Birthday Celebration at The Capitol Theatre

From March 14-16, 2019, Phil Lesh will once again celebrate his birthday at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.

What makes this year so special, however, is instead of playing with his usual touring crew The Terrapin Family Band, Lesh will recruit a number of Friends including John Scofield, Jackie Greene, Benmont Tench, Luther Dickinson, Amy Helm, John Molo and Grahame Lesh.

Lesh officially turns 79 on March 15, yet between a recently announced slot at the Newport Folk Festival and his consistent gigs at his own Terrapin Crossroads, he shows no sign of slowing down.

And while collaborators like Scofield, Helm and Greene are no stranger to the bassist’s Phil & Friends format, this will mark the first time Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Tench will play with in this configuration with the bassist. Along with The Heartbreakers, Tench covered “Friend of the Devil” on occasion and has performed with Bob Weir a few times over the years, largely thanks to his close connection with their mutual collaborator Jonathan Wilson. (Interestingly, Tench’s Heartbreakers bandmate Mike Campbell also had a recent brush with The Dead, opening Bill Kruetzmann and Bob Weir’s Hawaiian New Year’s Eve celebration.)
