Dave Matthews Band opened up a two-night run at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, continuing their fall tour that kicked off earlier this week in Ohio and returning to the famed NYC venue for the first time in eight years. Along with a delivering a setlist that featured both classics and newer tunes, Matthews and company welcomed surprise special guest guitarist Eric Krasno for a highlight of the evening.

The show began with an extended take on “Seek Up,” opening with a run of horn-heavy improvisation, before the band dipped into material from their latest album, Come Tomorrow, with “That Girl Is You.” Later in the set, DMB offered “Kill the King” and their cover of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” both songs that the band revived in their tour opener after shelving for years.

One of the peak points of the night came with “Lie in Our Graves,” with Matthews introducing Krasno before the band jumped into the Crash track. Krasno was heavily featured on the song, taking the spotlight during a slow-build solo that peaked then continued in a more subdued manner, with keyboardist Buddy Strong offering his own licks.

Krasno has been in the DMB orbit for some time, having sat in with the band several times since 2001, though last night was his first appearance with them since the summer of 2012, when Krasno’s Lettuce opened for DMB at MSG. DMB trumpeter Rashawn Ross also used to play with Lettuce and Krasno’s trio Soulive.

After the sit in, Matthews and the band continued with some live staples like “Typical Situation,” “Funny the Way It Is” and set closer “You Might Die Trying.” The night then rounded out with an encore of “What You Are” and the DMB classic “Ants Marching.”

See the full setlist below, along with some fan-shot footage from the night. Dave Matthew Band return to The Garden tonight for round two, while Krasno will lead his E3 trio with special guest guitarist John Scofield at NYC’s Blue Note tomorrow night.
