Former harmonica player in The Band Sredni Vollmer passed away today. Affectionately known as “Shredder,” Vollmer performed with the legendary rock group from 1986-1991 following the band’s reformation following Robbie Robertson’s departure.

Along with his experience with The Band, Vollmer also contributed to Rick Danko’s first solo album as well as collaborating with Rick often, including joining Danko’s band as a harp player in the ’80s and ’90s. Vollmer performed at the Danko memorial concert following his death. Some of Sredni’s other projects include collaborations with Hot Tuna, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Bob Dylan.

The cause of Sredni Vollmer’s death is currently unknown. Benefit concerts were held earlier this year for Vollmer, as it was reported he had fallen “quite ill.”
