JULIAN DORIO (THE WHIGS)

What will you remember most about 2009?

Obama being elected. Whether you’re for or against his politics, it’s a pretty amazing moment in history. Also, we’ve been writing and recording our new album. I guess that’s more relevant to this interview, ha.

What album or albums appeared most often in your iTunes?

I’ve been listening to Cass McCombs endlessly. I love his records. Also, we had the pleasure of playing with Band Of Skulls earlier this year and their new album is one of my favorites. Great band!

What was your favorite show or tour in 2009?

We’ve been fortunate enough to tour with Kings of Leon a lot this year. The venues were totally amazing but playing Red Rocks with them really stood out. I had a smile on my face the entire set.

What emerging band should readers watch out for in 2010?

Trances Arc, out of Atlanta, GA. Great rock band!!

What artist or artists will be most synonymous with the past decade?

Kings of Leon, White Stripes and Toby Keith!!

Musically, I’ll remember 2009 as the year Phish came back.

In no particular order:
The Duke and the King Nothing Gold Can Stay
Wilco Wilco (The Album)
Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Umphrey’s McGee Mantis
Tom Petty Live Anthology

What was your favorite show or tour in 2009?

It’s a toss up between Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band rocking The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle at MSG and Trey Anastasio’s performance with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall. I hadn’t seen Bruce since I was a child, and I’ve never been a big fan…until about 45 seconds into the “Thundercrack” opener at MSG on November 7. I stood there in awe for the next three hours, which was pretty similar to my experience at Carnegie watching Trey check off the number one item on his bucket list.

What emerging band should readers watch out for in 2010?

Back in October I made the fateful decision to check out Timbre Coup at a small bar here in NYC and when I arrived right before they went on to find six other people in the crowd, I started to wonder what I had gotten myself into. Any doubts were erased soon after the Albany-area quartet tore into one of their high-energy originals. Timbre Coup blend many different styles together to create intense, danceable music that should get them plenty of attention in 2010.

What artist or artists will be most synonymous with the past decade?

My Morning Jacket released one incredible album after another in the ’00s and also threw down in the live setting. I’d call them the Band of the ’00s.
