Guitarist Warren Haynes joined Dave Matthews Band at last nights free concert in New Yorks Central Park. In front of an estimated 100,000 people, Haynes took the stage for Jimi Thing and Neil Youngs Cortez the Killer, during which he traded vocals with Matthews. Warren has a long history with DMB, having collaborated with the group countless times over the years. I’ve been sitting in with Dave Matthews Band since the very first time they came to New York City when they played The Wetlands,’ says Haynes. ‘There were less than one hundred people at that show. The fact that we go back twelve years before anyone knew the band and to be a part of something so historic and beneficial, it’s pretty amazing.’
The show was a fundraiser for music programs in New Yorks public school systems. Concert sponsor AOL donated $1 million to a fund supporting music and arts education, with event organizers pledging an additional $1.1 million. Among those in attendance were actors Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon, tennis player John McEnroe, the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph and hip hop artist Jay Z.
Relix Magazine still has a limited number of its October/November 2002 issue, which features a Dave Matthews Band cover story. If you can tell us which Jambands.com editor wrote the story, we’ll send you a free copy of the magazine (hint: his or her initials are D.B.). If you know the answer, email [email protected] for your free issue. Be sure to include your mailing address and please put DMB in the subject line.
