In celebration of the 60th anniversary of A Love Supreme, John Coltrane’s magnum opus, comes this transparent diamond vinyl edition. For an album that always shows up on the Top Ten lists of essential jazz- and deservedly so- it’s an aesthetically striking pressing, appropriately so. And for those fans of high fidelity, it contains a deadwax clue that excites as a harbinger of the quality and care reserved for great greatness.

Really, this is one of those albums that has been researched and reviewed and regaled to a point where one more word praising its achievement could seem almost perfunctory. Nevertheless, sixty years is a long time, and the current generation of listeners may need a little push. So, here it is: add this masterpiece to the collection immediately. Coltrane’s crown jewel is that historic, evolutionary, important, affecting, hypnotic, spiritual, influential, thoughtful, and beautiful.

Now, if the idea of a contemporary reissue on vinyl gives pause, there are three little letters etched into the runout groove that should settle any nerves: RKS. Detectives of audiophilia spot these initials and, by and large, rejoice. RKS represents the mastering work of Ryan Smith, one of the brighter stars of the mastering community, and a youthful fave of the sonic-critic set eager for some heirs to the throne of Grundman, Ludwig, Hoffman, and Sax (among others). If none of those names means anything to you, that’s okay. Just understand that the choices made to present this epic as wonderfully in aesthetic is, as well, equal to how wonderfully it’s presented in sound.

A Love Supreme was a watershed moment, not just for Coltrane and jazz, but for the culture of mankind. It’s a deeply mined, deeply personal masterwork that transcends so many borders and boundaries.  Fittingly, this 60th anniversary issue is a must-have as a contemporary piece of vinyl honoring an absolutely iconic album.
