Zane Kesey, son of the acclaimed novelist, psychedelic pathfinder, and “The Chief” Merry Prankster, Ken Kesey, has shared an update on the original Further bus. In a Facebook post, the torchbearer expressed his enthusiasm and provided an update on the future of the multi-hue coach, unveiling a final opportunity to see it in its present form before it undergoes refurbishment.
Kesey writes, “Congratulations to the Original Furthur Bus!!! It is leaving the farm and headed to SF!! This is the first step in the restoration/preservation process. The bus will be the centerpiece of a gallery in Golden Gate Park. This will likely be your last chance to see it ‘raw’ rusty and unrestored.”
He continues, “If you have helped fund this long process with buying special items and auctions on my page… please congratulate yourself in the comments below, heck post a picture of what you got. Again thank you to Stephanie Kesey and the Furthur Down The Road Foundation nonprofit for sticking with it and getting it rolling in the right direction. More info soon, and more chances too help with funding.”
The original Further bus was purchased by Ken Kesey in 1964 to transport his Merry Band of Pranksters on cross-country escapades. Customized and fitted for its riders, the vehicle was decorated with kaleidoscopic tones, hypnotic patterns, and symbols of peace that nod toward the group’s free-spirited pursuit of a psychedelic odyssey.
According to the official non-profit organization’s mission in association with the bus, “The Furthur Down the Road Foundation is devoted to restoring and preserving author Ken Kesey’s original Furthur bus, with the aim of educating and inspiring current and future generations about Kesey’s life, works, philosophy and art.” Learn more and donate here.
