Taper’s Choice will celebrate Halloween with their debut performance at Chicago’s Garcia’s on October 30. The self-described “subversive jamband”‘s Taper’s Ball will be a three-set affair that nods to the scene’s history of special Halloween gigs. In an announcement the quartet explained, “You’re getting a BALL! Make no mistake – this will be an old school Jamband 3 set Halloween coded throw down at @garcias_chicago. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 am CT, but keep an eye out because ARTIST PRESALE pw : SONGHAT hits June 2.”
The ensemble previously held Taper’s Balls around Halloween at Los Angeles’ Gold Diggers in 2022 and 2023. Their 2022 shows had light and dark themed nights that wove in Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd covers, while their 2023 shows had a pronounced Big Lebowski theme, including covers of memorable songs featured in that film.
In related news, as previously reported, Taper’s Choice have also released highlights of their performance at Relix 50 on cassette. “Ladies and gentlemen, you can stop refreshing Etree…” drummer Chris Tomson said in a statement. “The official tape has arrived. Relix 50 was a dream both experientially and in terms of something, somehow, coming true. You know that guy who played on Live/Dead with the confirmed best initials in jam (TC)? He was, miraculously, there. And how about the guy who wrote “Scent of a Mule” and, famously, says “No”? He, too, graced our stage. How about Mikaela, Scott, a different Tom, Jake, Robert and many more? Legends, all. Taper’s Choice is a jamband (one word) and, as such, to be asked to play the 50th anniversary of Relix magazine was an amazing honor. We hope that our covers from the canon were judicious and that our own songs do the tradition justice. We are very proud that we pulled this show off and hope you enjoy this limited run of cassettes commemorating it. Thanks for listening and here’s to many more Relix anniversaries to come!”
The limited-edition cassette will be packaged with a retro portable cassette player that has both FM radio and voice recorder capabilities. Taper’s Choice will make their High Sierra debut on July 3.
