NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts are regarded for the physically tight space in which they are recorded, as well as the intimate sonic result for listeners. Needless to say, during Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble’s participation in the live performance series, the band filled the bookshelf-lined, poster-positive place with bodies, song, and spirit catapulted by the group’s delivery of the Grateful Dead’s “The Music Never Stopped,” a modified version of Hank Williams’ “I Ain’t Got Nothing But Time,” and more.
Notably, the group’s appearance comes after the arrival of Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble’s six-track album, Groove In The Face Of Adversity, which previously came out in October 2025, and inspired their Tiny Desk takes on “You Asked, I Came,” “Midnight Marauders,” “Insane,” and a rendition of Hank Williams’ “I Ain’t Got Nothing But Time.” The aforementioned material was built on the group’s delivery of the Dead’s “The Music Never Stopped,” derived from Was and company’s previous tour, which beckoned to the Blues for Allah.
Below, watch 11-piece ensemble Was (bass), Steffanie Christi’an (vocals), Wayne Gerard Milton (guitar), Luis Resto (keys), Dave McMurray (tenor sax), Vincent Chandler (trombone), John Douglas (trumpet), Jeff Canady (drums), Mahindi Masai (percussion), Herschel Boone and Terena Boone’s (background vocals) five-track delivery live from NPR Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Following the release of Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble’s Tiny Desk concert, they will take to the road for their own tour, while also joining Willie Nelson’s traveling Outlaw Festival on select stops. Learn more by visiting donwas.com.
