Widespread Panic’s multi-night run at Oakland, CA’s Fox Theatre continued yesterday. Now deep into their first extended tour in a decade, the members of Widespread Panic decided to have some fun with their setlist last night.
The evening opened with the Ain’t Life Grand track “Lil Kin” and the musicians then kept the theme going for a bit by performing a version of the Don’t Tell The Band tune “Little Lilly” that segued into the newer original “Little By Little” and, after a pause, their cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.” (“Little Wing” is one of only a few songs that the members of Panic actually played live together before their first official show that still lives on in their repertoire.) Winking to the four back-to-back songs with a variation of “little” in their name, Panic then launched into “Bust It Big” as the fifth selection of the set. “Pleas,” “Shut Up And Drive,” “C. Brown” and Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me” closed the first set. Panic has put together similar themed shows in the past, including notable sets of songs that referenced male and female characters.
Widespread Panic’s second set also contained a number of choice moments. After commencing the second half of the evening with “One Arm Steve,” the band offered an extended segue from “Hatfield” into “Tie Your Shoes,” “Jamais Vu” and, finally, Neil Young’s “Vampire Blues.” They then took a breath, before moving from “Greta” into Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and “Papa’s Home.” Panic’s version of Little Women’s “North” closed the second set.
Two numbers closely associated with the band’s late guitarist Michael Houser, a run from “Travelin’ Man” into “The Waker,” served as the night’s encore. Panic will close out their three-night Oakland stand this evening.
