Back in February, Primus officially announced that John Hoffman would become their new drummer, joining bassist/vocalist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde as the eighth musician to assume the kit previously covered by Tim “Herb” Alexander. Hoffman–now affectionately dubbed Hoffington–ascended to the prestigious posting through the “Primus Interstellar Drum Derby,” an inventive and fittingly oddball audition process that the band has been sharing in behind-the-scenes videos.

Today, the band has shared the 12th and final installment of the finalist vetting process: a special hour-long standoff between Hoffman and the tremendously credited and acclaimed Hungarian percussionist Gergő Borlai. The in-depth view of how Primus meshed to its new configuration features interviews with all the musicians, casual conversations and, of course, some explosive performances. On top of all this, Fred Armisen returns to reprise his role in the series debut, and Bob Odenkirk stops by for a first-time stab at the kit.

Primus will return to the stage tomorrow, May 10, for an engagement at Charlotte, N.C.’s PNC Music Pavilion. The band’s sprawling 41-stop “Onward & Upward” summer tour will continue through August 8 with special guests Ty Segall and MonoNeon. Find tickets and more information at primusville.com.
