Mt. Joy have released the latest preview from their impending fourth studio LP, Hope We Have Fun, due on May 30, via the single “Lucy.” An emotionally charged composition, the track serves as frontman Matt Quinn’s response to grief after receiving a health update on the song’s subject, who was diagnosed with multiple brain tumors following the group’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.
Quinn explains, “We were told that the prognosis was uncertain, but that it would be an uphill battle and there was uncertainty around fighting it at all. It was obviously sobering news.”
He continues, “From the invincible heights of the fairy tale we are so fortunate to experience in this band to the reality of how fragile things are in an instant, it was deeply sad, but I felt instantly inspired by the idea of someone living their life without fear when the odds are stacked against them. I found a pseudonym (‘Lucy’) and set out to write a song to pay tribute.”
Compositionally, “Lucy” highlights soulful vocal outputs, a churning piano line, and roots-laden guitar tendencies that take the listener on a journey through tales of plane-jumping shenanigans and crémant clinked mentions, linking the highlights of friendship and a defiant boast of vitality amidst great odds.
“Lucy” is the latest single from Mt. Joy, which previewed its impending full-length release with previously dropped songs “Highway Queen,” a duet with Marren Morris, and “More More More,” an expression of catharsis on and off the road.
