Dead & Company’s second residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere continued last night. A day after debuting their take on the Grateful Dead-adopted Spencer Davis Group original “Gimme Some Lovin’,” Dead & Company introduced another tune into their repertoire. This time the decade-old ensemble busted into Eric Clapton’s 1970 Slowhand favorite “Lay Down Sally” four songs into their first set. Though the Grateful Dead proper never performed “Lay Down Sally,” Jerry Garcia Band performed the Clapton cut approximately 50 times between 1990-1995. Dead offshoots Phil Lesh & Friends and Billy & the Kids have interpreted the number more recently.
Last night’s Sphere show, which includes some updated visuals and a nod to the late Phil Lesh, also featured a few noteworthy segues. During their second set, Dead & Company moved from “Estimated Prophet” into “Eyes of the World.” Then, after offering “St. Stephen,” they segued into “Drums” and “Space,” before the sliding into an expansive “Wharf Rat.”
Dead & Company will close out their first weekend of Sphere shows of the year this evening. The run will then resume on Thursday.
