On Friday, March 15, Eggy celebrated Purim at Anabel’s in Toronto. During the two-set gig, they offered a costume-clad performance that nodded to musical greats, particularly influential female artists ranging from contemporary favorites like Kacey Musgraves to the time-toggling aficionados of the craft Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson, Chaka Khan, and more. The band evoked the theme as a nod toward the story of Queen Esther in celebration of the Purim holiday.

In addition to the setlist, which trickled in a mixture of class covers from artists mentioned above, the band also embodied some of music’s leading ladies: Jake Brownstein as Joni Mitchell(guitar/vocals), Dani Battat as Britney Spears (keys/vocals), Mike Goodman as Janis Joplin(bass/vocals), and Alex Bailey as Joan Jett (drums/vocals), sinking further into the thematic trope.

Eggy queued up their initial cover, Emily King’s “Remind Me,” before establishing their bearings on “Between You and Me” and “You.” “Laurel” came as the jumping-off point for the subsequent feminine push into a debut of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up The Sun.” Without pause, the players reemerged on “Laurel” and eventually added “Trixieville,” which started a sequence that would go on to deliver a first-time cover of Heart’s “Baracuda” back into “Trixieville” and eventually a return to the 1977’s Little Queen pull to conclude set one.

The second half of the concert produced more nods to female greats after “Must Come Down,” the night’s theme-hitting “Queen’s Gambit,” and beginning with the aptly chosen follow-up, an ode to Kacey Musgrave’s Golden Hour era, on “Oh, What a World.” Fittingly, Bailey’s Joni salute expanded with the arrival of the first-time cover, “Big Yellow Taxi.”

One of the night’s most substantial bust-outs emerged as Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen,” last played by Eggy on Dec. 21, 2015, effectively ending a 530 show gap. See the video below. “Woah There” received a tease of Rufus’ “Tell Me Something Good” before the band closed their frame after “Golden Gate Dancer,” featuring a twist of set one closer, “Barracuda.”

The concert’s encore brought one final bust out, this time an ode to Chaka Khan on “Tell Me Something Good,” last played on Sept. 29, 2015, closing a 564-show gap. The band will continue their tour on Thursday, March 20, at The Met in Pawtucket, R.I. Tickets are available here.
