I’m With Her–the Americana supergroup of Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan, and Sara Watkins–have returned today to herald their sophomore studio album. Wild and Clear and Blue, the trio’s first full-length offering since their celebrated 2018 debut See You Around is due to release on May 9 via Rounder Records and shows the acclaimed combination further honing their collective sound. To preview this development, the group has shared the preview single “Ancient Light.”

“Ancient Light” showcases not only the folk powerhouse’s new embrace of rich studio polish–which lends a warm and mesmerizing character–but also each member’s profound understanding of the folk tradition they assume. Between their gorgeous close vocal harmonies and textured, resonant string arrangements, a meditation on heritage, cultural inheritance and life’s phases comes into focus, manifested in the artists’ impressive ability to merge their distinct styles into one voice.

“We started playing around with this riff in a Silverlake bungalow in October of 2022,” the band detailed of the new track in a release. “We were still at the beginning of writing this album, and as these images of joyful melancholy floated towards us, we found ourselves reaching for them in a free-flowing way that felt wholly new to us, yet completely natural. This song is a journey, and (producer) Josh Kaufman encouraged us to open the song up and let it breathe. ‘Ancient Light’ sets the tone for the entire album, communing with our past and future selves.”

Wild and Clear and Blue was recorded with Kaufman—a member of Bonnie Light Horseman and high-profile producer–at both The Outlier Inn in the Catskills and The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, N.Y. The band has shared a behind-the-scenes look at the process that led to this latest statement in an intimate, documentary-style music video and unveiled plans to celebrate the album’s release with a 50-stop tour, commencing at Wilkesboro, N.C.’s MerleFest on April 25 and culminating in a performance at Nashville, Tenn.’s Ryman Auditorium on Nov. 16.
