Last night, Oct. 3, Marcus King supported his Mood Swings tour by stopping at the Bayou Music Center in Houston, Texas, where he paid homage to the late Kris Kristofferson. The night was billed to include Brittney Spencer, who opened the concert before joining her host later on for the coveted tribute to one of music’s greatest songwriters. For the cover, the pair went with “Me and Bobby McGee.”

Before the arrival of Spencer for the night’s most talked about moment, King and his band worked through selections off his latest album release, for which the tour is named. And, ten covers, a sprawling collection of classics, each one a gem in its own right. The setlist included Grand Funk Railroad’s “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother,” The Marshall Tucker Band’s “24 Hours at a Time,” a solo acoustic take on Tyler Childers’ “Shake the Frost,” Jeff Beck Group’s “Rice Pudding,” amongst others.

Adding to the night’s intrigue, King covered the locationally fitting “Texas Flood,” which originated from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble–performed on the late namesake’s Oct. 3 birthday. Taking the final slot on the night’s setlist, after “Delilah” and “Wildflowers & Wine,” was the electrified Kristofferson cover featuring Spencer.
