My Morning Jacket kicked off a four-night, repeat-free run at San Francisco’s Fillmore last night. The group had not performed at the famed venue since their storied 2006 New Year’s run, and the show featured a number of surprises.

After opening with “At Dawn” and “O Is the One That Is Real,” the group dropped into “Master Plan,” tagging a bit of the Grateful Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower” during the tune as a nod to their surroundings. A few songs later, they also riffed on The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination” during “Carried Away,” a number that originated on Carl Broemel solo album All Birds Say.

The bust outs started a few selections after that with My Morning Jacket’s first take on Jim James’ “A New Life,” from his solo release Regions of Light and Sound of God, since December 31, 2017. Then, shortly after, the revived the Evil Urges track “Librarian” for the first time since MMJ played that LP in its entirety on March 5, 2018 as they were preparing for a hiatus. Then, James offered a solo omnichord version of “What a Wonderful Man,” before the entire band ran through the selection. Finally, at the start of their encore, My Morning Jacket revived their take on Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” for the first time since May 28, 2016, which felt fitting as news spread of Bill Walton’s passing.

My Morning Jacket’s Fillmore run will continue this evening.
