On Friday night, Dinosaur Jr. commenced a multi-night run at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, N.Y., to make the 30th anniversary of their fifth official studio album, Where You Been, released on Feb. 9, 1993, and garnering the band commercial success with the single “Start Choppin.” Over two nights of celebration, the group welcomed a standout lineup of guests to assist on choice numbers. Included were Hamilton Leithauser and Isaac Brock on night one, Dec. 1, and Kurt Vile and Warren Haynes on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The Dec. 1 concert began with a start-to-finish run-through of Where You Been, beginning with “Out There.” From the first play, the band continued to work through the LP tracking list, including “Start Choppin,” “What Else Is New,” “On the Way,” “Not the Same,” and “Get Me.” They continued with “Drawerings,” “Hide,” “Goin’ Home,” and “I Ain’t Sayin’,” which represented the final song from their 1993 release.

After capping the 30th-anniversary play, the band followed up with “Garden” and “In a Jar” before bringing out their initial guest, Leithauser, who helped out on “Feel the Pain.” Modest Mouse frontman Brock appeared on stage next, adding to “Watch the Corner” and “Freak Scene” before Dinosaur Jr. closed out the set, sans guests, on “Gargoyle.” For the night’s encore, they performed “Been There All The Time” and a cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” which also appeared on their 1987 set, You’re Living All Over Me

Saturday night started in the same vein as night one, with a complete play of Where You Been, followed by a “Garden,” which separated the LP celebration and the Vile’s appearance on ensuing “Crumble.” Vile stuck around for a cover of The Stooges, “No Fun,” swapping places with Haynes next, who turned up on the Brooklyn stage for The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” “Forget The Swan,” and the final song of the main frame, a cover of Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s “Cortez The Killer.”

Dinosaur Jr. ended Saturday night with a pair of originals, fan favorite “Feel the Pain” and Bug’s “Freak Scene.” The band will continue to celebrate Where You Been with five additional sold-out Brooklyn concerts before taking the celebration to Portland, Ore., after the New Year for the start of a fully-fledged tour marking 30 years of Where You Been.
