Last night, Sept. 10, Warren Haynes brought The Dreams and Songs Symphonic Experience to Morrison, Colo.’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, with accompaniment from the Colorado Symphony. As is standard for Haynes’ Now Is The Time Tour, the ensemble performed two symphonic sets from a local orchestra and a final, stripped-back set as the Warren Haynes Band, which features John Medeski on keys, New Orleans’ Terrence Higgins on drums, saxophonist Greg Osby and Gov’t Mule bassist Kevin Scott. In honor of the final symphonic staging, Haynes performed a first-ever solo version of the Allman Brothers’ “Revival.”
Along with the emergence of the classic ABB track during the first set of the evening, the entire show was filled with all things Allman. Haynes’ first set opened with “Dreams,” with “Instrumental Illness,” “Whipping Post,” and Gregg Allman’s “Just Another Rider” arriving during the second set, followed by an encore rendition of “Soulshine.” The Centennial State performance marked the first outing of “Just Another Rider” with the Warren Haynes Band and the third-ever live performance by Haynes.
The veteran musician and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra nodded to the Grateful Dead with several arrangements, bringing the night’s first set to a close with a one-two punch combination, a rendition of “Terrapin Station” followed by “Slipknot!” Notably, Haynes frayed from the expected, sans an appearance of “Help on the Way.” The rare duo–never done by the Dead or its offshoots–follows the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration at the same venue in 2016. A symphonic cover of “Shakedown Street” emerged during the second set, following interspersed material from Haynes’ and Gov’t Mule’s extensive catalog.
Haynes closed out the evening with an inaugural performance of 2024’s “This Life As We Know It” in anticipation of Million Voices Whisper, Haynes’ latest studio effort. The forthcoming record is set to arrive via Fantasy Records on Nov. 1, while Haynes is on tour across the U.S. For tickets and more information on upcoming tour dates, go to https://warrenhaynes.net/.
