It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from Bon Iver.
Since emerging from Eau Claire, Wis. with 2007’s For Emma, Forever Ago, Justin Vernon’s ethereal, hyper-literate confessions have been a cornerstone of the indie folk landscape, raising spirits and breaking hearts with each new chart-topping entry. Alternative landmarks like 2011’s crystalline Bon Iver, Bon Iver and the magnetic contortions of 2016’s 22, A Million helped to confirm Vernon as one of the defining singer-songwriters of a generation, and his influence rang out further still as he lent his production to artists as diverse as The Staves and Kanye West. Though the artist was reclusive from the start, his absence since 2019’s i,i—save for a pair of singles and scattered features—has been palpable. Now, At long last, the wait for word is over.
Today, Bon Iver has officially announced “S P E Y S I D E,” a new single set to release this Friday, Sept. 20. Featuring vocals and guitar from Vernon and viola and string arrangements from longtime multi-instrumentalist Rob Moose, this new offering lands as the band’s first since 2020’s “PDLIF” and “AUATC” singles. The cut is produced by Vernon and Jim-E Stack, who also animated those last standalone tracks, engineered by Vernon and Ian Gold (house engineer at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studio) and mixed by Vernon. The single, and an accompanying music video created by Wisconsin-based artist Erinn Springer, will arrive at 12 p.m. ET and is available to pre-save now.
Stay tuned for more information on Bon Iver’s return to the studio as it arrives. Beyond this headline, the band recently saw attention for performing at Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ first Wisconsin rally.
