André 3000’s much talked about and latest LP, New Blue Sun, a collection of instrumental flute songs, debuted at No. 34 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and now has furthered its legacy. The album’s opening track, “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time,” debuted at No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 making it the longest-ever song on the chart with a runtime of runtime of 12 minutes and 20 seconds.

According to insights from Billboard and @chartdata, André 3000’s track surpasses Tool’s iconic song “Fear Inoculum,” which held the previous record with a runtime of 10 minutes and 21 seconds and debuted at No. 93 in August 2019, dethroning David Bowie’s “Blackstar” which is 9 minutes and 57 seconds and peaked at No. 78 in 2016.

Recent years have marked a time of change in regard to top charting songs and their track time. For almost half a century, the record for the longest song to top the Hot 100 belonged to Don McLean’s “American Pie (Parts I & II),” clocking in at 8 minutes and 37 seconds. However, in 2021, Taylor Swift claimed the new longest No. 1 spot with the 10-minute-and-13-second “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault).”

Notably, “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time” features collaborations with Carlos Niño, Nate Mercereau, and Surya Botofasina. Additionally, André 3000 took on the role of co-producer for his experimental album, working alongside Niño.
