On Saturday, the annual Sound Summit event was held atop Mount Tam at Sidney B. Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre in Marin County, CA. The day-long festival featured marquee sets by Father John Misty, Guster and Jerry Harrison’s 50 Years of Talking Heads, which grew out of his Remain in Light project with Adrian Belew and Turkuaz. La Luz and Angeline Saris & The Snack Machine also performed.

The single-day gathering also boasted some notable cross-pollination between bands. During Guster’s set, the Boston-bred band brought Harrison back to the stage and nodded to the multi-instrumentalist’s time with Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers by debuting their take on the proto-punk classic “Roadrunner.” The song, which appears on the Boston musician Richman’s seminal 1976 LP The Modern Lovers, was a particularly notable choice given its lyrical references, which have been described as a “love letter to Massachusetts Route 128.”

The members of Guster are longtime fans of Harrison’s work with both the Modern Lovers and Talking Heads. After the set, they posted, “The first Modern Lovers record is seminal for the Gusters because we’re IN LOVE WITH MASSACHUSETTS – what a dream to share the stage with a legend.  Then we all watched Father John Misty crush his set – one of the best touring bands existing right now. Helluva day in Marin County.”

The ensemble has also covered Talking Heads’ “(Nothing but) Flowers” on and off since 2002 and included the track on their 2004 live album Guster on Ice. They will appear next at Kennett Square, PA’s Longwood Gardens Open Air Theatre this coming Wednesday.
