Following the recent announcement and cancellation of two scheduled in Asheville, N.C., dubstep producer Bassnectar shared a statement on his Instagram account. The post, which has comments turned off, follows Bassnectar’s attempt at a comeback three years after publicly declaring a hiatus amid allegations of habitual sexual misconduct involving underage fans.

The post features a colorful psychedelic image with Bassnectar’s logo at the center with text proclaiming, “We Don’t Cancel Culture We Create It.” Bassnectar, whose real name is Lorin Ashton, wrote a caption to accompany the post, which does not directly address the ongoing allegations of misconduct brought against him by multiple plaintiffs involved in a lawsuit. Instead, he launched a tirade against what he perceives as “cancel culture,” which he believes has orchestrated a “campaign of hostility, intimidation, and preposterous lies” targeting him.

“Cancel culture is obsessed with destruction. We do not destroy. We create,” Bassnectar wrote in the post. “Our community is beautiful, peaceful, and centered on basic values and human rights. We have the right to thrive. We have the right to peace. We have a zero tolerance policy within our community for Cancel Culture in any form.”

He then went on to confirm that his upcoming shows at Las Vegas’s Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay were proceeding as planned and addressed the Asheville cancelations. “Sadly, as we prepare to unite in Las Vegas to celebrate and rejoice together – our FREAKSTYLE event in Asheville has been postponed.” He claimed that Asheville had fallen victim to a “campaign of hostility, intimidation, and preposterous lies” aimed at disrupting their event. Bassnectar emphasized their commitment to thriving and spreading positive energy across the nation, asserting, “We have the right to thrive,” and concluded with a resolute statement: “We will not back down.”

While his initial response to the allegations appeared remorseful (“I feel intense compassion for anyone I may have hurt,” he stated at the time), his recent words and actions have taken a decidedly different tone. Stacey Ashby, attorney for Ashton, responded to inquiries about the Las Vegas event by stating, “Our client is under no obligation to put his life and career on hold because of false allegations.” She further described the ongoing civil litigation as “meritless” and attributed it to “three disgruntled former romantic partners of Bassnectar.”

Ashby also made it clear that they would take legal action “against anyone who slanders Bassnectar or ‘interferes with the Bassnectar community’s right to thrive.'”

The lawsuit against him remains in the discovery phase with no trial date set.
