Following the passing of The Band’s Robbie Robertson on Wednesday, August 9, the music community responded to the massive loss by paying tribute to the legendary songwriter and guitarist. Amongst the homages was a trio of covers that landed during the tail end of Greensky Bluegrass and Molly Tuttle’s mid-week concert at Kettlehouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Mont.

During the tribute, Dobro player Anders Beck pointed out there were 52 strings ready for plucking, “We figured we’d get as many strings as possible up here for you and for Robbie Robertson.” While the comments came later in the night, the first cover took shape as “Up On Cripple Creek,” which entered Greensky Bluegrass’ repertoire for the first time last night and served as a debut. During the number, Paul Hoffman and Tuttle shared the favored lyrics.

For their follow-up, Greensky Bluegrass’ Dave Bruzza embodied Levon Helm’s approach to “The Shape I’m In.” Last night’s take on the tune, which initially appeared on 1970’s Stage Fright, included a significant jam, with all those on stage adding in riffs. At one point, Tuttle and Bruzza even went head-to-head on guitars.

For their final take on The Band’s material, the players went with a heartfelt cover of “The Weight,” but not before the aforementioned stings comment. The arrival of the tune’s brief instrumental start was recognizable and quickly brought forth the first line of lyrics. The cover produced special moments, including a stunning solo courtesy of fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes. When all was said and done, the final part of the night allowed each musician to flex their prowess, centered around rock history and the loss of a musical troubadour.
