Songwriter and harpist Mikaela Davis have delivered the first single and visual equalizer for “Far From You,” a tune that will be featured on the musician’s newly announced album, And Southern Star, due on August 4 via Kill Rock Stars.
News of the artist’s forthcoming album arrives five years after the release of her debut collection, Delivery. Since then, Davis has left her hometown of Rochester, N.Y., and graduated to share the stage with Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Christian McBride, Bon Iver, Lake Street Dive and Circles Around the Sun.
The first single off the impending collection, “Far From You,” was written by brothers Cian and Shane McCarthy and spotlights ghostly vocals accompanied by gentle piano. “Oh, but if I was to meet you in the moonlight,” Davis exhales before the song offers an optimistic view through a stirring, psychedelic instrumental outro, penned by Davis and brimming with illuminated percussion, harp and guitar.
The Hudson Valley-based artist shared a statement via a press release. She added: “I grew up listening to artists on Kill Rock Stars, and it’s amazing that this independent record label is still run by the same folks who started it 30 years ago. The fact that KRS believes in my band’s music is a dream come true. Excited and extremely honored to announce And Southern Star will be released August 4 on this legendary label!”
