Last night, Mickey Dolenz, an American actor, musician, TV producer, businessman, drummer and last surviving member of The Monkees, stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During his appearance on the show, Dolenz, an old friend and inspiration of The Tonight Show’s host Jimmy Fallon reminisced together before a short musical performance of The Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville.”
Over the course of their conversation, the two spoke about the start of Fallon’s career in 1997, who at the time was a struggling actor. Dolenz recognized his potential and recommended he audition for a television show, which served as a great source of confidence in an otherwise difficult time during Fallon’s early career. “I want to tell you it built my confidence as a comedian and someone who couldn’t get a gig, or get a callback, or anything, that little boost, that little someone believing in you, really meant a lot to me, and I’ll never forget it,” Fallon said with appreciation.
Their talk then shifted to Dolenz’s legend as they spoke about an ill-fated 1967 performance where the legendary Jimi Hendrix opened for The Monkees. Hendrix’s advanced playing and experimental inclinations proved to be too much for the uninitiated, who ended up heckling Hendrix by shouting, “We want Davy! We want The Monkees!”
After plugging his upcoming book of photos, which details similar stories of his career titled, I’m Told I Had A Good Time: The Micky Dolenz Archives, before joining the house band The Roots for a rendition of The Monkees’ classic “Last Train to Clarksville.” Fallon, of course, joined with jubilation and admiration on vocals and the tambourine.
Notably, Dolenz will soon embark on a tour in honor of The Monkees titled, The Monkees Celebrated by Micky Dolenz. Find tickets here.
