Phish hosted the third show of their annual Mexican destination event at Cancun, Quintana Roo’s Moon Palace last night. The evening kicked off with a rare “Gotta Jibboo” opener, two modern standards, “No Man In No Man’s Land” and “Steam” and the group’s first take on the Mike Gordon-sung original Phish tune, “Poor Heart” since August 7, 2021. From there, the quartet moved into a version of “Halley’s Comet” that segued into “Saw It Again,” a once seldom played number that has dotted many more setlists since 2021, as well a take on “Theme From the Bottom” that slid into “Maze.” The Ghosts of the Forest song “About to Run” and “Most Events Aren’t Planned,” a track from Vida Blue’s debut album that entered Phish’s repertoire during the Baker’s Dozen in 2017, closed the first set.

The musicians’ second set commenced with an extended “Down with Disease” that setup a completely segued set consisting of TV on the Radio’s “Golden Age,” “Soul Planet,” “Runaway Jim,” a deep “Light,” “Piper” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra.”

For their encore, the band played two beloved, slightly quirkier numbers that nodded to the event’s vacation setting: the Junta tune “Fee,” whose lyrics reference a “banana tree” and “The Wedge,” whose words inspired Jim and Brighton Denevan’s official sand pyramid art installation, I’m Building You A Pyramid.

Phish’s Mexican run will conclude with an early set this evening.
