Last night, Billy Strings continued the kick-off of his winter tour with the second of three nights at the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo. The performance once again saw the fretboard fireworks of Strings and his bandmates, who moved through a collection of covers, traditionals and originals.

The evening kicked off with a cover of Bill Monroe’s “Dusty Miller” and a jam of “While I’m Waiting Here,” which found its way into the Robert Hunter-penned “Thunder.” Other highlights from the opening set included Strings’ debut of “How Long Have I Been Waiting On You” by Jonathan Edwards, the euphonous “In the Morning Light,” which was followed by the story behind “one of the funnest little fiddle tunes we could ever think of,” “Libby Phillips Rag,” and a set closing jam of “Fire Line” > Billy Failing’s “So Many Miles” > “Brain Damage” by Pink Floyd.

The second set kicked off with the running “Hollow Heart” off Home, followed by a cover of Pearl Jam’s “In Hiding.” They then continued with a pristine cover of John Hartford’s “With a Vamp in the Middle,” which melded into another favorite from 2021’s Renewal “Love and Regret.” Other covers in the second set included Chris Henry’s “West Dakota Rose,” Tom Paxton’s “Leaving London,” The String Cheese Incident’s interpretation of the Stanley Brothers’ “Think of What You’ve Done,” and “Whispers of the North,” By Gordon Lightfoot, the last of which jammed into “Meet Me at the Creek” which brought the second frame to a close.

After much applause and admiration, the ensemble returned to the stage for a two-song jam of the traditional “Sally Goodin,” which flowed without pause into Johnny Horton’s “Ole Slew-Foot.”

Strings will return to The 1STBANK Center again tonight. For those who can’t make it in person, enjoy the tour opener from Feb. 2-4 on nugs.net. with a live stream and an on-demand 48-hour here.
