Brandi Carlile returned to New York’s Madison Square Garden last night. As she has in the past, Carlile used her big-stage appearance to collaborate with a range of friends.

During the main portion of her set, Celisse Henderson emerged for David Bowie’s “SpaceOddity” and Radiohead’s “Creep.” Then, during Carlile’s encore, she invited out Allison Russell for her original “You’re Not Alone” and Brittany Howard, who opened the night with her own cover-heavy set, for James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s World.” Finally, Carlile’s own children took the stage for “Hold Out Your Hand.”

Carlile, who has been instrumental in encouraging Joni Mitchell to return to the stage career in recent years, also kicked off her encore with a take on the veteran songwriter’s “Woodstock.” The Grammy-winning performer’s next scheduled date is a New Year’s Eve show at Portland, OR’s Moda Center.
