On Wednesday night, Gov’t Mule continued their fall tour in Mobile, Ala., where they took a stand at The Saenger Theatre. For the Oct. 20 performance, the Warren Haynes-led ensemble worked through two jammed-out sets, which included a sit-in from The Meters’ George Porter Jr., who reached back into his fabled repertoire and, in turn, unleashed a takes on collaborative renditions of “Hey Pocky A-Way” and “Fire On The Bayou,” during the evening’s second frame.

The night began with “Lay Your Burden Down,” which flowed into “Brand New Angel” and “Mr. High and Mighty.” The night’s initial set brought forth a tight “Mother Earth” off the band’s self-titled 1995 LP before the they worked through a cover of Whitesnake’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City.” A striking take on “Devil Likes It Slow” arrived before “So Weak, So Strong” and a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Soulshine,” which paid homage to Haynes’ time with the beloved band.

After closing the night’s first set with “Mule,” the group exited for a brief break. Upon their return to the Cotton State stage, the unit of rockers started the show’s last frame with “Million Miles From Yesterday,” followed by “Thorns Of Life.” Then, the night’s guest performer, Porter, descended upon the stage. Together, the celebrated musicians worked through two Meters covers, including 1974’s “Hey Pocky A-Way” and an epic continuance on “Fire On The Bayou.” After Porter left the stage, Gov’t Mule was left to conclude the concert with more fan favorites pulled from their expansive repertoire.

For the night’s encore, they covered Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” before leaving the stage and ending their time in Mobile, Ala. After last night’s performance, Gov’t Mule will continue their fall tour in Little Rock, Ark., where they will perform at The Hall. Tickets remain available for tonight’s show.
