Georgia Public Broadcasting will premiere the movie A Night of Georgia Music on July 4 at 7 p.m. ET. The film was recorded in front of a live sold-out audience at Macon, Ga.’s historic Grand Opera House and Capricorn Sound Studio in March 2022 and features an array of Georgia’s most beloved tunes performed by some of the Peach State’s top talent.
A Night of Georgia Music was conducted by Ware Stare and features R.E.M. founding member Mike Mills, internationally celebrated violin soloist Robert McDuffie, former Allman Brothers Band member and current Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, performing alongside students of Mercer University’s Robert McDuffie Center for Strings. Additionally, the movie incorporates elements from the 2017 Mills-composed Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra.
The forthcoming film showcases songs written by an assortment of Georgia’s favorite contemporary artists like Otis Redding, Ray Charles, The Allman Brothers Band, R.E.M., Outkast, the B-52s and Brook Benton. “A Night of Georgia Music” sees the ensemble work through numbers like 1973 Gladys Knight standard, “Midnight Train To Georgia,” Otis Redding’s “Respect,” Outkast’s “Hey Ya,” and R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion,” among many other adored tunes.
