Eric Clapton has announced that he will not perform at U.K. concert venues that require proof of vaccination for entry. Clapton has been outspoken about his own experiences with the COVID-19 vaccine, calling the press around its safety “propaganda,” and his physical reaction to the vaccine “disastrous.”
Clapton’s statement is in response to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Monday, July 19, that vaccine passes would be required to enter venues and nightclubs throughout the country.
The statement from the 76-year-old iconic British guitarist and songwriter was given to London-based Italian architect and film producer Robin Monotti Graziadei, who published it on his Telegram channel. The statement reads: “Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021 I feel honour bound to make an announcement of my own: I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present. Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show.”
Clapton along with Van Morrison released a song titled “Stand and Deliver,” that echoed their views on the lock-downs in response to the deadly virus, in December of 2020. More recently, the two released the track “Rebels” where Clapton questions where the rebels have gone and figures that they’re “hiding behind their computer screens.”

July 29, 2021 at 11:41 amEnjoy your life folks. Once you lose it, it is gone. No right to put others at risk, nor continue a pandemic fight because you don’t “trust/believe” in the only weapons able to fight it. Care, it’s catching!

July 23, 2021 at 9:44 pmUsed to love what Eric did but he is a racist piece of shit who, after getting a shot himself is fine with risking the lives of his fans… to think that a collaboration between him and Van resulted in Stand and Deliver? What next? Opening act at the pillow guys convention? That shot obviously affected him because he’s lower than the days he was shoving needles into his arms… Eric, get some mental help you fucked up piece of shit…

July 23, 2021 at 2:35 pmIt is not an issue for me as I can’t afford his concerts anyways. He has priced himself out of the common folks being able to see him, so who gives a rats ass what he says. The idea that he thinks he stands for something is rubbish. He stands for money, that’s all. If they didn’t offer him a fortune he would not be touring and we wouldn’t be wasting our time ion this s**t.

July 23, 2021 at 11:53 amUnless you are a 76-year-old former junkie with resulting chronic vascular problems, then Eric Clapton is not like you. Because of his past heroin and alcohol addiction, he is at significantly higher risk of having complications and dying from COVID-19, which is why he chose to be vaccinated. It is not inconceivable that his overall health condition made him more vulnerable to an adverse reaction to the vaccine. The good news is he recovered and is able to go on tour. The bad news is he thinks he is just like us. He’s not.

July 23, 2021 at 12:51 amWho does he think he’s punishing by canceling shows?? Fucking idiot.

July 22, 2021 at 11:55 pmHe’s done a lot of IV and blow in the past. And he’s never really been a health nut, like Bob Weir, or had decent health. I thought he said he was spent a few years ago? What exactly di did happen after he got vaccinated? Will he write a song about that?

July 22, 2021 at 11:31 pmIf you don’t get vaccinated, you will greatly increase your chances of dying.

July 22, 2021 at 10:23 pmIf you are vaccinated what is the concern? You can go see Springsteen..
Clapton is God No More
July 22, 2021 at 11:09 pmthe concern is that vaccinated people can still carry the virus and transmit it to others who are unvaccinated and otherwise medically vulnerable.
it’s pretty basic. I can be asymptomatic and still transmit the virus. especially a concern where there are crowds in confined spaces.
not getting vaccinated is the equivalent of being unwilling to do and participate in greater good – to the benefit of everyone.
there is no excuse for selfishness for anyone medically eligible to receive the vaccine.
Clapton wants people to be at liberty to spread the virus should they choose to. Given his battles with addiction and losing a child to an open window from a high floor in a building, one would think he’d have greater compassion and want to prevent anyone else from potential grief and suffering.
does that answer your question?
dVentilatior Blues isn’t just a song title.

July 22, 2021 at 6:43 pmAnd I am sick to death of people equating this with personal freedom. If you go into a crowded theater and yell fire you will be arrested for creating a public health risk. Arresting people who are not vaccinated would be a better analogy. I’m not supporting that, yet, but that is where the discussion should be in a civil society.. Your freedom ends where you infringe upon someone else’s. They really don’t teach civics anymore do they?!
DIE REPUBLIKKKANS DIE
July 22, 2021 at 6:42 pmWow, E.C. I’ve called myself a fan of yours (not really the regurgitated solo stuff, more so Cream and Derek and the Dominoes days) for a long time- even after your apology for the quoted drunken racist rant as seen in posts above. This bullshit of yours made me rethink my appreciation of you. Solid guitar player, but a total fuckhead as a human being.

July 22, 2021 at 6:39 pmLisa H. – Exactly! His experience was bad, so…it is ok for him to threaten my life?! Not sure I see the logic there.

July 22, 2021 at 6:37 pmFirst of all, would you want to share space with a shoulder to shoulder crowd that wasn’t vaccinated against smallpox or polio in the middle of a smallpox or polio outbreak? Let’s put it into perspective. There’s a reason those diseases no longer circulate like they once did.
Yes, vaccinations can have negative effects, but when the effect of the disease is a million times worse than that of the vaccine, you don’t know how to play the odds if you shun the vaccine.
With that said, Clapton is within his right just as much as a concert promoter that wants to insist on requiring proof of vaccination. Maybe the promoter doesn’t want to be responsible for a super spreader event.
And you’re within your right to choose whether to attend a concert with unvaccinated folks or to insist on only venues that require vaccination.
That’s what freedom is all about.
As for Clapton himself, I’d rather go see an artist like Pat Metheny than a poser like Eric, playing the same tired old blues jams over and over again. Definitely not worth risking my life, and I’m vaccinated. It’s not 100%.

July 22, 2021 at 5:28 pmIt’s too bad smugness doesn’t equate to accuracy. 63% of all statistics are fabricated. Or is it 42%? Doesn’t matter as long as you believe the media and do as they say. Lots of hate being thrown around for something overwhelmingly affecting those with multiple comorbidities.
Ned
July 23, 2021 at 11:44 amBrian – are you a doctor (like me), a nurse, a respiratory therapist, or someone else treating adults and children with COVID-19? The pandemic overwhelmingly affects EVERYBODY. I’ve lost friends to it. People have lost family members to it. Children have lost parents to it. If people with comorbidities are at higher risk, then isn’t it up to the rest of us to do everything we can to prevent them from suffering? Statistics can change but facts matter. So does kindness and empathy.

July 22, 2021 at 5:09 pmJust goes to show you can be a great guitarist and still be a mental midget. Yes choosing not to be vaccinated is a personal decision. However, that decision adversely affects other persons!

July 22, 2021 at 5:10 pmAmen to that!
live or die, it's your choice
July 22, 2021 at 6:08 pmThat’s his choice, just like it’s ok for owners of venues and jurisditictions of venues to make the choice to require standards for entry. Your right to do whatever you wants ends when you leave your home. Everybody’s got choices and choices have consequences, some good, some bad. Clapton’s made some pretty bad choices and said some horrible things during his tenure on the stage, I don’t think he’s in a position to be so righteous. I will say this. If you don’t get vaccinated and you do get the COVID and need hospital care, stay the fuck home and live (or die) by your choice, that’s what freedom is.
Brian Krashpad
July 22, 2021 at 4:59 pmWhat a fucking toolbag.
Both he and Van Morrison can go goose-step into the sunset. As John Shanley accurately notes above, Clapton has a long history as a racist piece of shit. Fuck the both of them.
Marquino
July 22, 2021 at 4:47 pmEC received the astrozenica vaccine which is not approved in the U.S. The side effect he had with numbness of his arms is a short term side effect with no long term problems. I will exercise my freedom by not going to his shows. Here in the U.S., the covid cases are 95% in unvaccinated people- morons. A decrease in our moron population may be a good thing. They can rant that Trump won as they die.
Phil Paulbrick
July 23, 2021 at 12:36 amClose, but not quite right. 99.5% of ICU ward patients are completely unvaccinated. You may still get the Covid D variant if you are unlucky but won’t be sick enough to be admitted to the hospital. If you are not vaccinated, your odds of even surviving are not good. So you can go out crying, Doc, give me the vaccine. Sorry son, it’s too late. That’s what you get for thinking you’re smarter than every Dr. on the planet. Even Mr.T said “I pity the fool.’ My only sorrow for you is how many innocents you’ll take with you.
John Shanley
July 22, 2021 at 4:42 pmLook who’s whining about “discriminated audiences”: This is Eric Clapton in 1976:
“Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands… So where are you? Well wherever you all are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country … I don’t want you here, in the room or in my country. Listen to me, man! I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white …”
John M Shanley
July 22, 2021 at 4:36 pmWell, first of all, senior citizens like him and Morrison are among the most vulnerable, so it would really be pretty funny if they contracted this. And I know it was a while ago, but I only recently realized what a racist f-k EC is, so I wasn’t likely to be going to any more of his shows. And he hasn’t done anything real since, I dunno, 1977? Good riddance.

July 22, 2021 at 4:07 pmIt’s all about you, is it, Eric? Fame and fortune seem to have compromised your critical thinking skills. As great a guitarist as you have been, you’re not worth worth one more person dying for.

July 22, 2021 at 4:06 pmSaw EC live once at MSG, Jeff Beck opened for him. Can’t say how disappointed I was to see one of my favorite musicians mail-in an entire show that cost $200/seat (this was back in 2010 or so). I don’t even think he stood up the whole 50-minute show. Beck absolutely upstaged Clapton and I could never enjoy a Clapton tune after that show.
After his commentary on covid and vaccines, I’m completely done with this idiot. Just goes to show that artistic talent and a huge bank account can’t buy intelligence or class.
Hopefully him and Van Morrison can play covid wards sometime soon.
me
July 22, 2021 at 12:59 pmOn the bright side, the place should be packed with enough unvaccinated, anti-vaxer retards that within a few months should result in the percentage of common-sense vaccinated people increasing. Maybe if Eric and Van do a world tour they can help eradicate COVID naturally… of course, I feel bad for all of the doctors and nurses who will have to be with those anti-vaxer morons crying about how they didn’t know it was so bad… as they take their last breath…
Die anti vaxers
July 22, 2021 at 11:03 am612k dead people are not propaganda , Clapton and Van Morrison are idiots. Stupidest saying is ” my body my choice” in light of the effectiveness of the vaccines. Will be laughing watching them cart you to the ICU crying i should have gotten the vaccine
Evildad
July 22, 2021 at 4:22 pmClapton is vaccinated, that’s one of his complaints. He had a reaction that scared the shit out of him, so now he’s pissed about it. And yet, he’s also vaxxed. Make sense of that!

July 22, 2021 at 5:02 pmAnd he calls it disastrous but he’s fine and going on tour. Would he rather be on a vent or dead? I think not.

July 22, 2021 at 4:27 pmYour body, your choice…ever think of anyone else? I’m sorry that Clapton had a “disastrous” response to a vaccine. What kind of disaster? He’s alive to bitch about it.
We (the medical staff) are BOUND BY LAW to treat you and all the people you pass the virus on to because you are to selfish to roll up your sleeve and take one for the team – stand with your fellow man and get a vaccine.

July 22, 2021 at 10:12 amStay strong, Clapton and Van the Man. The propaganda is rampant. A wise bearded man that was “here to shed light, not to master”, stated “One way or another, this darkness got to give”.

July 22, 2021 at 9:18 amGood to know Clapton is still a legit hippie representing all people and freedom choice! Enjoy your rights folks, once we lose them they’re gone.
bring my gun everywhere cause its my right to do whatever I want
July 22, 2021 at 11:01 amI demand the freedom to bring my machine gun to all concerts. It is my right as a hippie. Anyone that disagrees is not a hippie, and anyone not a hippie is dumb because hippies know everything. Jerry knew everything and always made the right choice which is why he live to a ripe old age of 53. It was the vaccines that gave him a heart attack and put him in a diabetic coma. All hippies know that heroin, cigarettes, and overeating are actually good for you and anyone who says otherwise is following evidence and science which is another word for propaganda. This is known.

July 21, 2021 at 5:39 pmI guess i feel compelled to release my own statement which is I stopped being interested in seeing Eric Clapton in the 90’s. Wonder if face value tickets for Madison Square Garden are less than $350 next time. He doesn’t seem to mind an audience discriminated based upon inability to afford his absurd ticket prices.
