Umphrey’s McGee promised “an evening of mostly true tales” at their June 27 stop in Woodstock, NY, and delivered in spades, channeling Levon Helm Studios’ namesake with their first version of The Band favorite (and Marvin Gaye original) “Don’t Do It” since 12/31/2011.
The evening included an opening take on the newer original “Suxity,” but the band really heated up in the second frame.
After kicking off set two with “Puppet String,” they later teased “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” within “Higgins” and “Immigrant Song” within “We’re Going to War.”
“Whistle Kids” and “Believe the Lie” closed the show, and the band further stripped down during the encore as keyboardist Joel Cummins played a solo version of the deep-cut “Orfeo.”
From there, UM closed the show with their own “The Weight Around” and the aforementioned bust-out, marking their third-ever “Don’t Do It” (show gap: 843).
