Tedeschi Trucks Band played the fifth installment of their Fireside Live sessions in Murfreesboro, TN this past Sunday night.

According to the band’s website, the Fireside Live shows are all unique as the twelve-piece band has yet to fully reunite – instead each show features a portion of the full band.

Sunday featured bandleaders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, drummer Tyler Greenwall, bassist Brandon Boone, vocalist Mike Mattison, and keyboardist Gabe Dixon. As the night came to a close they brought out guitarist Marcus King to close the second set with renditions of the Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying.”

The night began with the fervent vocals of Mike Mattison opening over a cover of Dan Penn’s “Sweet Inspiration.” By the song’s end, the set was well underway as Tedeschi Trucks jammed to their own creations, “Do I Look Worried,” and “High & Mighty.” After a breath, they broke out a cover of the Derek and the Dominos classic “Keep on Growing.” From there they did just that – rolling out Susan Tedeschi’s original track “Looking for Answers” recently added to the band’s setlist, and “Shame.” They left the crowd for a set break after closing with a rendition of Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces” paired with Charles Segar’s “Key To The Highway.”

The second half of the Fireside Live in Murfreesboro began calm and collected with their original track “Laugh About It” setting the stage for a display of soul and skill. Next was another Susan Tedeschi original track “Just Won’t Burn,” an eloquent slow burn of blues that gave a sense of calm and confidence to the crowd. From that space, Tedeschi Trucks carried on to Paul Pena’s “Gotta Move” and Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk.” With the heat back they ripped out the complex, dynamic, and beloved “Let Me Get By,” and a melody combined from The Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree,” and John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” Then out came Marcus King. The Tennessee resident was ready to play and play he did. “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” went on for over twenty minutes, not a moment wasted. The guitarist went eye to eye, toe to toe, note to note, with Derek Trucks. Tyler Greenwall held them up and shone in his own light through his percussion creating space for each member of the band to bask over the crest of sound they built together. They held that height throughout the rest of the set as Tedeschi and King shared vocals on Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying” to close out the evening.

Tedeschi Trucks Band’s up coming album Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN’) which was recorded August 24, 2019 at the LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, VA is set to release July 16, 2021.
