Umphrey’s McGee returned to Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre yesterday, kicking off a three-night run at the iconic venue. At the start of their second set, Umphrey’s McGee launched into a version of their new single “Restrung” that segued into “The Silent Type.” “Restrung” is a reworked version of “Unsung Hero”–a tune Umphrey’s McGee played six times between May 2019 and January 2020–and appears on the group’s forthcoming LP, You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall And Left A Raging Bull. “It’s the same chords and song form, but entirely different melodies, soundscapes, and vibe,” drummer Kris Myers said in a statement. “UM has brought the track to life for the big stage, bringing the team approach to this sonic missile. Brace for impact.” Last night’s show marked the first time Umphrey’s McGee has played the new arrangement live.

Soon after, the sextet jumped into a cover of Talking Heads’ 1983 classic “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).” Though Umphrey’s McGee has covered Talking Heads chestnuts like “Burning Down the House,” “Girlfriend is Better” and “Making Flippy Floppy” numerous times, it marked the first time the band has performed the Speaking in Tongues tune.

Umphrey’s McGee will take the stage at Red Rocks once again this evening
