Grateful Dead HQ offered a belated Mardi Gras celebration with a newly released pro-shot clip of “Iko Iko,” filmed live at California’s Shoreline Amphitheatre on Sept. 30, 1989.
“Although some early versions of ‘Iko Iko’ appeared out of ‘Drums’ and ‘Space,’ by 1984 it was primarily a set opener, both the first and second sets,” explains GD legacy manager/archivist David Lemieux. “Whenever those opening notes of ‘Iko Iko’ opened a first or second set, it felt like party time was starting, and a fun set was coming up.”

February 18, 2021 at 7:39 pmFun tune but definitely over-played in the later years. Seemed like the lazy way to go for Jerry to just throw out an Iko and not have to challenge himself much. It was fun when it was new to the repertoire and they varied the tempo from show to show. Eventually it got kind of perfunctory.

February 18, 2021 at 4:25 pmYup, they’re basically identical, 2 chord calypso/Island/Reggae tunes, one sung by Jerry IKO IKO (Traditional / Dixie Cups) done in D major, and A major, and Bob’s Man Smart Woman Smarter (Belafonte) just a full step down in E major and B major.
