On Feb. 12, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros (Jay Lane and Don Was), along with keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, took the stage at Weir’s TRI Studios in California for a livestreamed show celebrating the Chinese New Year. In addition to Chimenti and Leisz, Weir also invited a horn and strings section, dubbed The Wolf Pack, to perform during the second set. The Wolf Pack is Alex Kelly, Brian Switzer, Adam Theis, Mads Tolling and Sheldon Brown. The show was streamed on FANS.
Five of the songs played throughout the evening were Wolf Bros live debuts: “Brown Eyed Women,” “Mission in the Rain,” “My Brother Esau,” “Uncle John’s Band” and a cover of The Clash’s “Train in Vain.” In fact, three of those had not been performed by Weir since 2014 at the latest. He last performed “Mission in the Rain” with RatDog on July 2, 2014, while “My Brother Esau” hasn’t been performed by Weir since June 14, 2014 (also with RatDog). Finally, Weir hasn’t covered “Train in Vain” since his gig with Furthur on Apr. 24, 2013.
The show kicked off with Little Feat’s “Easy to Slip,” followed by “Only a River” and the aforementioned “Brown Eyed Women.” Later in the set, Weir treated fans to a rendition of Grateful Dead classic “Tennessee Jed.” The set closed with “My Brother Esau.”
The Wolf Pack joined Weir and co. on stage during set two, which largely featured Grateful Dead live staples. After the opening Clash cover, the band weaved through a “Playin’ in the Band” sandwhich with the live debut of “Uncle John’s Band” in the middle. They then moved into “Truckin'” and “Eyes of the World.” Ultimately, the set closed with the fitting pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider.”

February 15, 2021 at 9:44 amSorry if Phil made choices as to what music he wanted to do without consulting YOU. Ohh Ohh Furthur. Ohh Ohh Jerry’s gone. The cries of the bitter. Get with it, people pass on and bands disband. YOUR SN gives a good hint as to your state of mind.

February 16, 2021 at 10:25 amDead & Slow suck, and I saw Furthur was even better than the GD at most times. Phil didn’t know how good he had it, had nothing to do with “what music he wanted to do”. All he could see was $happy waving dollars in his face and $200 per night “subscription” tickets in his face. Note that the “great deal” quickly went away and Phil hasn’t done shit since…
