Umphrey’s McGee kept things fun for their New Year’s gig in Denver, welcoming a newly formed brass section dubbed Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret horns (Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou on trumpet, Jeff Coffin on saxophone, Chris Ott on trombone, and Josh Quinlan on saxophone) , offering debut covers and even playing their first version of The Lonely Island’s “Dick In A Box” in over 10 years.

Set one highlights included it’s not us cut “The Silent Type” containing teases of “You Belong to the City” by Glenn Frey which segued into “2×2” and a closing “Miss Tinkle’s Overture.”

Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret horns amplified most of the second period, including a debut of David Bowie’s “Modern Love,” UM’s first version of “Headphones & Snowcones” since 2016 and their first-ever take on Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical.”

The setlist antics continued through set three, as the band rang in 2020 with their new horn section jamming through “All In Time” (with teases of Super Mario Brothers themes) and landing in the traditional “Auld Land Syne.”

The debut original “Suxity” followed, as did their first-ever take on Jamiroquai’s “Alright.”

Later, the horns emerged once again for the aforementioned “Dick In A Box” bustout, last heard on Jan. 1, 2007, before UM closed the show alone with live favorite “The Triple Wide.”

They encored with the Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret horns on their debut of Fantastic Negrito’s “Bullshit Anthem” and their own “All In Time,” complete with elements of “Auld Lang Syne.”
