After adding a Bob Dylan cover to their repertoire the evening prior, Dead & Company returned to San Francisco’s Chase Center on Dec. 31 to ring in the New Year and even jam with old friend Zakir Hussain.
“SF! Had a roaring good time ringing in the new year with you,” Bob Weir wrote afterwards via Instagram.
The three-set offering kicked off a little after 8 p.m. with a pairing of “In The Midnight Hour” (nodding to the impending new year) and “Big Railroad Blues” before the California crowd sang along to the always-rowdy “Iko Iko.”
Set one also contained Grateful Dead favorites “Mr. Charlie,” “Loser,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Sugaree” and a set-closing “New Speedway Boogie.”
After a quick 29-minute setbreak, Dead & Company’s second round offered the classic trio of “Help On The Way”> “Slipknot!”> “Franklin’s Tower,” before their love letter to the West Coast, “Estimated Prophet.”
An “Eyes of the World” jam bled into “Drums”> “Space” with additional percussion work by Hussain, who sat in with D&C in 2015, and previously collaborated with Mickey Hart on his 1972 album Rolling Thunder.
Out of the ether of “Drums”> “Space” came Miles Davis’ “Milestones,” before Weir led the charge on “Standing on the Moon”> “Not Fade Away.”
As the clock struck midnight, Father Time (aka Bill Walton) soared across the arena in a plane and Dead & Company launched into a cheery “Sugar Magnolia” jam, which segued into “Uncle John’s Band”> “Scarlet Begonias”> “Fire On The Mountain” and the appropriate “Sunshine Daydream.”
Dead & Company closed their New Year’s celebration by declaring “We will survive” in “Touch of Grey.”
The band’s next shows will be their sold-out “Playing in the Sand” event from Jan. 16-19 in Mexico.

Also worth mentioning, an entire chorus line of flappers danced in the new year – fantastic!

January 2, 2020 at 9:39 pmWho was the baby new year??
He looked familiar, but could not put my finger on who he was. Bill Walton was obvious, as was Trixie (so ever beautiful) in the plane.
Sunshine Daydream

January 2, 2020 at 6:44 pmSunshine Kesey was in the plane with Trixie Garcia — not Sunshine Becker. God you people are stupid.

January 2, 2020 at 1:34 amTrixie Garcia and Sunshine Kesey were on the plane (not Bill Walton). Women are often overlooked in the deadhead scene- I’m disappointed Jambase didn’t report this accurately.
