After offering a high-energy night one, Widespread Panic returned to Atlanta’s Fox Theater on Dec. 30 for yet another two-set offering, including their first take on David Earle Johnson’s “Time Is Free” since March 2, 2017.

Fans were delighted to hear an opening “Space Wrangler” – best remembered as a signature tune of late guitarist Michael Houser – as well as the following “Walkin’ (For Your Love).”

Later, an improv-heavy “Pleas”> “Jam”> “Stop-Go” was a highlight of the first half, as was the always-emotional “I’m Not Alone.” Set one closed with “Little Kin” and “Conrad.”

Widespread Panic’s second songlist was punctuated by a “From The Cradle”> “Saint Ex” opener as well as a rhythm section “Drums and Bass” jam that waded into an instrumental tease of the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One.”

A monstrous “Greta”> “Fishwater” closed the show with plenty of fanfare, but it was WSP’s encore in Atlanta that had setlist statisticians praising the band.

Widespread Panic’s third-ever version of Los Lobos’ “Somewhere in Time” kicked off the encore, followed by the aforementioned “Time Is Free,” last heard at the band’s Panic En La Playa destination event in 2017 (show gap: 102). For good measure, the show closed with a rowdy “Ain’t Life Grand.”

Widespread Panic’s New Year’s run continues in Atlanta tonight.
